The Nara Clan is known for their manipulation of shadows and tending of deer, which graze in a large area of Nara clan forest. Nara was the capital of Japan in the tenth century. Shika means "deer" in Japanese. They have kept a book with medicine preparations and effects for generations which imply they are skilled in the area of medicine. Among the medicine described in this book are the secret pills used by the Akimichi Clan. The men from this family are very lazy, tend to be attracted to overbearing women and are apparently genius's

Name: Shadow Imitation Technique
Type: No Rank, Supplementary, Mid range (0-10m)
Descritpion:The Shadow Imitation Technique's original purpose is to delay pursuers in order for a team to flee. With the use of a hand seal, the user can stretch a shadow up to twice the length of all of the shadows the projected "shadow" touches combined. If a target is captured within the user's shadow, the result is that the two combatants will mirror each others' movements. Therefore, the two can throw shuriken at each other at the same time if the user desires that.

Name: True Shadow Clone Jutsu
Type: No Rank, Supplementary
Description: This jutsu is a combination of the Nara clans shadow techniques and Shadow Clone Jutsu. By using a combination of Shikamaru's chakra and his own shadow he can replicate himself and all of his own jutsus. The clone is able to withstand much more damage than a regular clone as it does not disperse with one solid blow. Its also capable of performing jutsu, however it can only perform them if Shikamaru gives it a sufficent amount of chakra. The clone does have it's weaknesses though. It loses power in direct sunlight, it can only perform more difficult jutsus when Shikamaru gives it enough chakra, and has a limited amount of time until it can return to it's shadow form. If the shadow does not return within 30 minutes of it's creation Shikamaru will die. Also during the time the shadow is seperated from Shikamaru he is very limited with his shadow possesion jutsu and thus is weakened.

Name: Shadow Demon Stripe Technique
Type: Offensive, Long range (10m+)
Description: The user throws flash bombs behind him, to not only blind his foes but also to extend the range of his shadow indefinetely. Once those preperations are complete, he/she can put any parts of their body in front of the light and it will appear as a enormous shadow. Once his shadow is ready, he can constrict his enemys easily just by closing his hand. Other parts of his body have not yet been seen, though it is speculated to do the same thing. In addition to the shadow, this techique may consume more chakra but, it is much easier to hit the opponent and cause major damage.

Name: Shadow Endgame Technique ( Kageyose no Jutsu)

Description: The Shadow Endgame Technique is similar to the Shadow Sewing Technique. However, where Shadow Sewing uses shadow tentacles to tie down and restraint the opponent, Shadow Endgame allows the user to grasp and manipulate objects with the tentacles. This gives the Shadow Endgame Technique a wide variety of uses.

Name: Shadow Membrane Technique
Type: Offensive, Defensive, Short range (0-5m)
Description: The user releases several smoke bombs the engulfs the enemy in smoke that said person wraps their shadow around before constricting it to a small egg-like size that they force to implode.

Name: Shadow Neck Bind Technique (Kage Kubi Shibari no Jutsu)
Type: No rank, Offensive, Short to mid-range (0-10m)
Description: After capturing an opponent with the Shadow Imitation Technique, the user can then further extend their shadow up to the target's throat in the shape of a hand, which chokes them to death. Also if the user is at a last resort, and the shadow possession isn't making them copy their moves, he will bind the opponents body in order to stop all their movements and cause great amount of damage. In addition, the closer the user is to their opponent, the tighter the strangle will become. However, with an incredible amount of strength, the target can force the shadow hand off, first demonstrated in Shikaku's battle and then in Shikamaru's fight with Tayuya, and against the Legendary Stupid Brothers, Fujin and Rajin.

Name: Shadow Sewing Technique ( Kage Nui no Jutsu)

Hand Seals: Rat, Bird
Description: The Shadow Sewing Technique is a technique unique to the Nara Clan. The user first extends his shadow by using the Rat hand seal, then creates shadow tendrils by using the Bird hand seal. The tendrils can serve various purposes such as attacking or binding an opponent and/or attacking multiple targets such as when Shikamaru used the Shadow Sewing Technique against Sai's drawn animals about to attack Naruto Uzumaki.

Name: Shadow Imitation Shuriken Technique ( Kagemane Shuriken no Jutsu)
Type: No rank, Supplementary, Short to mid-range (0-10m)
Description: Using the trench knives ability to absorb the user's chakra, in his case his chakra. With this, the user can target his opponent's shadow and remotely trap them in the Shadow Imitation Technique. This is extremely advantageous as he/she is no longer restricted to a stationary position while holding down their opponent. This charge is apparently independent of physical contact as he was able to restore it with the Shadow Sewing Technique.
